Literacy Campaign

Colored pencils arranged like a plant being watered by a watering canister, while resting on a clock-stool hybrid

Background

This project was an exercise in abstraction, aiming to use aspects from a TED Talk in order to create a poster that drives visual interest. The goal was to take photos of objects and transform them into abstracted, but still representational ideas related to the TED Talk.

Manoush Zomorodi's TED Talk was one about putting the electronics for just a little bit every day in order to help drive creativity. Her talk went over a social experiment she ran where she encouraged people to lower their screen time, and went over a lot of the positive stories that she received in response.

Process

After listening to the original TED Talk, my first job was to sketch out and brainstorm different ideas for what could relate to time passing, creativity, and electronics. I had a lot of ideas that were a bit too on the nose, such as a brain, phones, and other things that didn't really fit the parameters given to me.

After more brainstorming, I ended up on a few things: an analog clock to showcase the lack of digital devices, colored pencils to showcase creativity, the colored pencils turning into a plant to showcase growth, and finally somebody watering the "plants" in order to showcase that you have to try for this growth.

What I learned

This project taught me a lot, and has helped me dramatically through the brainstorming phase of projects. Before this, I thought too literally, and was always making things that were too on the nose. Because of this project, I have been challenged to become a better and more creative thinker.
